After two years of upward movement, the American box office is down 5.3 percent from last year. The total gross for films released in 2014 was $10,347.9 billion which is off nearly $600 million from 2013. Ticket sales were also down for a second consecutive year with 1,274.4 tickets sold. This is down 5.2 percent.
Even though this year had its fair share of hits such as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Maleficent’, many sequels underperformed. ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ made $60 million less than its predecessor and the most recent entry in The Hunger Games series isn’t performing as well as many expected and will likely make $60 to $75 million less than its predecessor.
Audiences have shown that they want original content and not so many sequels. Hits like ‘The LEGO Movie’ and ‘Gone Girl’ are great examples of this.
