In an exclusive by Deadline, they are reporting that Academy Award winner Lupita Nyongo’o and David Oyelowo are in talks to star in the Disney adaption of the true story ‘Queen of Katwe’. The film is based off of Tim Crothers’ ESPN Magazine article and his book of the same name.
The movie would be about Phiona Mutesi who lived in poverty in Uganda, was able to compete in the World Chess Olympiad. Deadline is reporting that Oyelowo would star as Mutesi’s mentor, Robert Katende and Nyongo’o would play her mother.
The film will be directed by Mira Nair (Amelia & Monsoon Wedding) and will be written by William Wheeler. The film will be given a budget of $15 million and be filmed in South Africa and Uganda.
