The highly anticipated finally to the successful Liam Neeson franchise, ‘Taken 3’, was released this weekend, pulling in and estimated $40.4 Million. This is down from the previous installment which made $49.5 Million back in October 2012. This is due in part to the lukewarm reception of ‘Taken 2’ which was generally thought to be a weak sequel by critics and fans alike. All of this aside, this is still an impressive debut, scoring the 2nd best January opening behind ‘Ride Along’.
Coming in second, the civil rights drama ‘Selma’ expanded in its third weekend of release, pulling in and estimated $11.2 Million. This is a disappointing estimate when compared to similar titles such as ‘The Butler’ and ‘The Help’.
Rounding out the top 5 are three holiday holdovers ‘Into The Woods’, the final ‘Hobbit’ film, and ‘Unbroken’ earning $9.75 million, $9.43 million and $8.36 million respectively.
The top 12 films earned $112.5 million which is down 16.1 percent from last weekend.
