‘Birdman’ & ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ Gets Theater Expansion After Oscar Nominations

In the wake of their Oscar nominations success, Fox Searchlight has announced that ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ and ‘Birdman’ will receive a theater expansion. After receiving 9 nominations each, ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ will be re-released in theaters for a limited engagement and  ‘Birdman’ expanded today to 450 theaters with another expansion to 900 theaters on January 23rd.

‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ will be shown at select theaters in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, Washington DC, Phoenix, San Diego, Denver, Houston, Seattle, Columbus, and Cincinnati.This is a fairly large expansions for a film that was released back in March of 2014 and is already being shown on HBO. Since the beginning of award season, the film has become a huge Oscar contender despite it being released so long ago.

‘Birdman’ was released on October 17, 2014 in 4 theaters and since then has reached more than 800 theaters and has earned $26.7M domestically.

Fox Searchlight received 20 nominations yesterday, the most nominations of any studio, picking up additional nominations in the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories for ‘Wild’.
