After a couple extremely successful weekends in limited release, ‘American Sniper’ was released on January 16th and is set to set the box office on fire. Original estimates had is breaking the January box office record with around $45M but now estimates are expecting double that.
‘American Sniper’ pulled in an incredible $30.5M on Friday which includes Thursday previews. This haul is goo enough to break the record for a single day gross in January, dethroning ‘Avatar’ which brought in $25.8M back in 2010. Also it became to highest grossing opening day for a January film, beating out ‘Cloverfield’ which made $17.2M back in 2008. ‘American Sniper’s’ opening day haul is 77% higher than ‘Cloverfield’s’.
Clint Eastwood has also broke some of his personal records. ‘American Sniper’ becomes the director’s biggest opening film, beating ‘Gran Torino’ which pulled in $29M over its entire weekend. In addition to ‘American Sniper’, Eastwood also released ‘Jersey Boys’ last year. Current estimates predict that ‘American Sniper’ could earn $85M over the weekend, and more than $100M for the four day holiday weekend. This haul would be twice as much as ‘Jersey Boys’ earned in its entire run.
