After three weekends at number one, ‘American Sniper’ was demoted to the second spot with ‘The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water’ scoring an estimated $56 million.
Other big releases this weekend, ‘Jupiter Ascending’ and ‘Seventh Son’ didn’t fair as well, flopping as expected. This weekend also saw terrific holds for Oscar nominated films.
Check out my analysis after the jump.
In the show first big screen outing since 2004, ‘The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water’ pulled in a boatload of cash. Early projections from Box Office Mojo predicted the film would earn $41 million this weekend but crushed expectations when it earned $15.1 million on Friday. This film earned an estimated $56 million, which is good enough for the fifth best February opening ever.
In second place is ‘American Sniper’, easing 21.2 percent to earn $24.16 million. The Clint Eastwood directed film has now earned $282.26 million domestically, making it the third highest grossing film of 2014 behind ‘Mockingjay Part 1’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’.
‘Jupiter Ascending’ came in third, disappointing with and estimated $19 million. The film cost $176 million to produce, which makes this number look even worse and is the third consecutive flop for the directing duo The Wachowskis. Look for this movie to make up for it internationally where it earned a good $32.5 million from 65 international markets.
In fourth place, ‘Seventh Son’ bombed with a paltry $7.1 million. Like ‘Jupiter Ascending’ look for this movie to make up for its U.S. grosses over seas where it has already made $83.6 million.
‘Paddington’ came in at fourth, earning and estimated $5.36 million. The film has now grossed $57.26 domestically.
Another notable film this weekend was ‘The Imitation Game’, continuing an amazing run at the box office, only down 2.6 percent from the week before. The WWII film earned $4.88 million this weekend, bringing its total to $74.7 million.
The top 12 was up slightly from this time last year, earning $139.3 million.
