‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Whips Up $30.2 Million on Friday

As expected, ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ dominated the box office on Friday with $30.2 million. Also, fellow new release ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ was able to earn a good $10.5 million.

‘Fifty Shades” Friday debut was good enough to earn the fourth best first day opening for a Rated-R movie. The film is only behind ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ (37.5 million), ‘The Hangover Part II’ ($31.6 million) and ‘American Sniper’ ($30.3  million). This may seem like an impressive number, but compared to titles like ‘Twilight’, it is trailing.

The first ‘Twilight’ movie made $36 million on its first day and this was before the franchise really exploded. If ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ plays out similarly to ‘Twilight’, the film will make less than $70 million which is in line with Universal forecasts. But, if the film manages to over perform on Valentine’s Day, the film still has a chance at a $90-million-plus weekend.

‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ managed to earn $10.5 million, opening higher than director Matthew Vaughn’s ‘Kick Ass’ ($7.66 million). You can expect this movie to earn a number somewhere in the mid-$30 million range.
