‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Pirated 300,000 Times in its Opening Weekend

After breaking several box office records, it looks like ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ is breaking one they probably don’t want. In its opening weekend, the film was illegally downloaded nearly 300,000 times.

According to piracy-tracking firm Excipio, the poor quality recordings have been downloaded via torrents by 298,037 unique IP addresses. The U.S. had the highest volume of downloads with 44,896 downloads. Other countries that downloaded the film quite a few times are the UK (33,839), India (19,298) and the Philippines (16,952).

For comparison, the second highest grossing film of 2014, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was illegally downloaded 198,873 times in its first week of release.

‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ was released on February 13, 2015 and stars Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan, Luke Grimes, Marcia Gay Harding and Rita Ora. The film is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.
