Meryl Streep to Narrate African Women’s Health Documentary

Oscar winner Meryl Streep will narrate the documentary ‘Shout Gladi Gladi’ which focuses on women’s health in Africa. The film is directed by Adam Friedman and Iain Kennedy.

The project will be a collaboration between Ann Gloag’s Freedom From Fistula Foundation, and her experience dealing with women who have obstetric fistula in Kenya, Malawi and Sierra Leone. This condition can cause once healthy women to be cast out, especially in Africa. The film also features other prominent women such as Nobel Peace laureate Wole Soyinka and philanthropist Melinda Gates.

“This powerful film attests to the igniting power of one woman, Ann Gloag, to set in motion hundreds of helping hands, doctors, nurses, caregivers, family and friends, to resuscitate the health and status of victims of fistula, and to give them back their lives,” said Streep.

Obstetric fistula kills 500,000 women in Africa each year, with 80% of them being preventable said the filmmakers. They also noted that 2,000,000 women live with this condition in Africa.
