Leonardo DiCaprio will star and produce in ‘The Crowded’ Room which is based on Billy Milligan, the first person to successfully use multiple personality disorder as a defense in court.
DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Alexandra Milchan will produce through their company Appian Way, alongside New Regency. The film will be adapted from the book ‘The Minds of Billy Milligan’ by Daniel Keyes, with Jason Smilovic and Todd Katzberg coming on board to write the script.
Billy Milliagan was charged with robbery and the rape of three women on the Ohio State University campus in the 1970s. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity when he was diagnosed with multiple personality disorder. His lawyers argued that two of his 24 personalities committed the crimes and they were the first to use this defense in court. Milliagan would be found not guilty.
DiCaprio has been talking about this story for 20 nearly 20 years, mentioning it in an interview in 1997.
