After ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ became a huge success, grossing $528 million so far, many fans are wondering when the next book in the series will make its way to the big screen.’Fifty Shades Darker’ is expected to begin shooting in early 2016, for an expected Valentine’s Day release in 2017. But first, Universal is going to have to pay up because the film’s leads want more money.
Reports suggest the Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson signed on for three movies when they agreed to star in ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ but it isn’t uncommon for stars to renegotiate for more money once the series proves to be a hit. Sources say that they were paid $250,000, plus box office bonuses but now the stars a seeking a seven-figure raise. Neither star received back-end compensation for their work on the first film.
Other franchises that has done this are ‘The Hunger Games’ who paid Jennifer Lawrence $500,000 plus $1,000,000 in bonuses after the first film was released. She was paid $10,000,000 for ‘Catching Fire’. The stars of the ‘Twilight’ franchise saw similar boosts in pay once the first movie became a success.
Producer Dana Brunetti wasn’t optimistic about the possibility of a pay raise for the stars who wants to keep the budget low and thinks these films will make the actor stars so they can make money elsewhere.
“That was the great thing about this film – we knew we were going to be able to make stars. Now it’s their opportunity to get paid on other projects. It’s been a breakout role for both of them. I’m sure they are getting tons of offers on other things.”
Even if the actors do get a pay raise, the production has to find a writer and director first. Sam Taylor-Johnson and screenwriter Kelly Marcel have reportedly left the series after frequent disagreements with author E.L. James.
Do you think they deserve a raise? Or do you think they should just stop making the movies?
‘Fifty Shades Darker’ will be released in 2017.
