Angelina Jolie Removes Ovaries Following Cancer Scare

Angelina Jolie revealed early Tuesday morning that she has gone into menopause after undergoing a procedure to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes following a cancer scare.

She revealed all of this in an op-ed piece in the NY Post, detailing how after receiving blood test results indicating that she could have earlier stages of cancer, she followed up with surgeons to find out if she actually had the disease. Further tests showed that “there was still a chance of early stage cancer, but that was minor compared with a full-blown tumor.” The actress previously lost her mother, grandmother and aunt to cancer.

Last week, Jolie underwent a laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, removing her ovaries and fallopian tubes. Doctors found a benign tumor on one of her ovaries but no cancer in any of her tissues.

“It is not possible to remove all risk, and the fact is I remain prone to cancer, said the actress. “I will look for natural ways to strengthen my immune system. I feel feminine, and grounded in the choices I am making for myself and my family. I know my children will never have to say, ‘Mom died of ovarian cancer.'”

She also revealed that due to the procedure, she has stated to undergo menopause regardless of her hormone replacement therapy. Angelina Jolie said that she will no longer be able to bare children and that she feels “at ease with whatever will come, not because I am strong but because this is a part of life. It is nothing to be feared.”

She ends the piece by saying:

It is not easy to make these decisions. But it is possible to take control and tackle head-on any health issue. You can seek advice, learn about the options and make choices that are right for you. Knowledge is power.

Angelina Jolie previously underwent a preventative double mastectomy after a test result informed her that she had a 87 percent chance of break cancer and 50 percent chance of ovarian cancer.
